the young planet

i watched in disbelief this morning on al jazeera, of indians in the amazon who have not yet had contact with civilization. i remembered reading about the vastness of the amazon and of its bountiful and seemingly infinite natural resource. the brazillian researcher who discovered them while flying over unexplored regions of the area lamented on the eminent extinction of the race due to over logging and encroachment on the amazon forest. the extent of their isolation is cemented with images of Indian tribes aiming arrows at the passing helicopter - most likely assuming it to be a monster sent by the gods to end their very existence. this i fear is true, as any contact with the isolated Indians would mean their end for purely pathological reasons.modern man is immune to diseases that the Indians cannot even dream of. in fact, they are the last remaining pure souls on earth. every time an explorer enters the amazon and braves into new regions, there is a new discovery. i hope our curiosity would be dampened by rationality and a willingness to maintain some modicum of purity.
