Skepticism

It took me a while but I'm finally here... Yes, I'm a skeptic. I know I said I didn't like labels, but this one suits me best. It just defines my greatest trait, my skepticism. For one, I am never sure of anything; not even gravity. I'm like 99.9% certain that if i jump out of the 4th floor window, I'll die; but I still have some iota of doubt. Similarly, I'm 99.99% sure that there is no god or gods, or if there were, they care less what happens to us as individuals or to the collective. With gravity, I have proof, borne from statistical and physical data. With the gods, same thing. The level of indifference to the suffering of individuals, groups and nations as shown by the (hypothetical) gods seems to be proof enough that only humans care about humans and empathy is not a trait of the god(s).  Suffice to say, the actions of those with god(s) on their side informs more to the narcissistic, ego-maniacal, apathetic nature of their supposed god(s) and the indiffe...

Finding love in unusual places

When I was three, I fell in love with a chicken. To be fair, it was more curios infatuation turned to unholy lust. I did not lust for Lucy's flesh, for that is what I called her, but for her attention. I will spend hours throwing down corn closer and closer to me, teasingly drawing her towards me. Lucy was my first "chick" and I had already learnt the greatest lesson of manhood as a child; if you have the "dough" the "chicks" will come. Then my mother did the cruelest of things and taught me my second lesson. She murdered Lucy when I was out with my sister. When we returned, I was served with the tastiest jollof rice and chicken I had ever had. Later that day, when I asked for Lucy, my mother told me to look in my stomach. I cried so loud and so long, I must have grown an extra lung. Lesson number 2 was, don't love anything or anyone that fits into your mouth. when i was six, i fell in love with a girl. to be fair, it was more a fascination with ...

Encore

I live on borrowed time in borrowed space.  These words I write are not even mine, in a tongue not even my own.  Words borrowed from different places juxtaposed to express my only true possession; my deepest sorrows, this permanent melancholy stained on my hopes, etched into the rims of my happiness. My zeal for life drowns in this ocean of despair and I'm left clutching at nothings as all I hold dear drags me down like an anchor into this bottomless abyss. Like a chain reaction, I go from thinking about life to Chernobyl in three point its over, and I'm left shaking, sweating in a fetal state as the radiation of fear washes over my core beliefs, mutating them into cancerous values. The imp I see constantly on my shoulders at these moments sound more convincing each time as he whispers into my left ear,  "Don't worry. To every problem there is a final solution". It won't be long now. After all, what difference would it make? Who cares? The reverbe...

an average man

Looking in the mirror I see a man look back. I know very little about where he has been or where he will end up. I only wish to be a part of the journey he is on. I see the face looking back at me, staring deep into my eyes and deep into my soul. I felt his sadness as he did mine. A tear crept down my cheeks as it did his. In that we are the same; filled with deep rooted sadness about our inadequacies, weighted down by our rudimentary understanding of this universe. The man in the mirror looks away in disappointment. I could not bare his sight too. I know he is as disappointed in me as I in him and he in himself. For what made me an average man, if not the man in the mirror.

Seven Years...

seven Year is a long time like the oceans against the rough rocks at the shoreline you have come and gone over and over again gently stroking my person till i have become perfect a smooth pebble seven Years is a long time within this time i have felt my heart beat faster than the nineteen odd years before we met i have cried more, laughed more, had more sleepless nights, sighed more, been more miserable and more happy than the nineteen or so years before we met seven Years is a long time starting with that innocent kiss that afternoon just before my first math test i was sure it wasn't innocent then the more passionate kisses followed confirming my earlier assuption i miss the innocent times when all i did was sit, and all you did was kiss me so awkwardly seven Years is a long time we've shared more kisses innocent no more we've shared parts of us we have have been told were private we shared our bodies, mind and soul till we did not know when i beg...

Re-inventing God

If I am to buy into the school of thought that the god I know to be the one true god is the god of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob (The Abrahamic God Concept), I will be forced to believe in the history of a people as the history of the world. By subscribing to that faith too, I will have to ignore the obvious bias in that history towards a people, and acknowledge the fact that for 4000 or so years, god was a Jew. I will also have to ignore the varying times in the history of other groups, and nations that miracles have occurred, attributed to their god or gods; thus totally rubbishing the existence of other gods or a god outside the Jewish sect. Further more, I will have to concede that all actions as recorded as being done under the instructions of or with the consent of the god of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, are absolute righteous deeds. Therefore mass murder in the name of ones god, slavery, forced circumcision, chauvinism and total disregard for other cultures and beliefs will be lauded a...

An ode to Maybe

true word amongst words a knight of words in shining amour I have fallen in lust for the last time .... maybe I shall taste of this bitterness no more.... maybe We shall not caress flesh to flesh and sweet nothings to unintelligible murmuring no more ... maybe Maybe I will wake up and this will be the harmattan  of 2001, before my innocence was robbed of me so sweetly. what hope Maybe brings the possibilities of wishing on opportunity costs the allure of impossible futures and plain wishful thinking oh thank the gods for Maybe and the gods are thankful for Maybe they exist Maybe, Maybe, Maybe... I will sacrifice my dreams to you and Maybe, you will answer me I will sing of your praise on nights with clear skies as i count the stars and wish for a falling one I will say, Maybe if i wish on a falling star .... i could only dream Maybe, you will make a better poet of me someday

Euphoric gloom

Get up off you slowly pulling out this should be an euphoric moment yet i feel not so at all my face is down my heart is down and my penis takes a cue sex is supposed to be a cure all but my ailing heart is unresponsive Maybe it's because this is not the first time Maybe it's because we have tried this treatment one too many times
